Oh, Nissan, you tease. Nissan partnered with glow-in-dark pavement creator Hamish Scott to concoct a special paint as a symbolic representation of how Leaf inspires its owners to convert to solar energy. The company has just coated a Leaf EV with some custom-made glow-in-dark paint, which can apparently last for up to 25 years -- but it has no plans (not yet, anyway) to make it available for purchase. This concoction absorbs energy from the sun during the day, which gives it power to glow at night for up to 10 hours. How to Replace a Brake Light Switch on a Chrysler 300 (2005-2009), Dodge Charger (2006-2009, and Magnum (2005-2008)

Use caution at this step as you do not want to break any of the plastic on the electrical connector. Now it was time to replace the defective part. Carefully slide the brake light switch out of the holding bracket. You will need a 1/4inch drive socket wrench [1], a 1/2inch socket [2], a long stemmed flat tipped screw driver [3], and a flashlight [4].

I promptly went to the nearest auto parts store and purchased a new brake switch for about 10 dollars and some change. Count the number and verify the shape of the electrical contacts as well (don't touch the contacts). This will protect you and the car from accidental shocks or short circuits. For this repair, you will need 4 tools. Check the electrical connectors and plastic tabs [1] to make sure they aren't broken. Depress the plunger [2] lightly a few times to ensure that it springs back. You will need to be able to squeeze your body into the tight space under the dash.

B) Brake switch open or short circuit

A scan of the computer revealed the following error code: P0572 - BRAKE SWITCH 1 STUCK ON. Slowly release the brake pedal. Most auto parts stores won't allow you to return a part once you have installed it, even if it is the wrong one. You should feel it click into place. Twist the switch clockwise about 30 degrees bumper parts to engage the locator tabs. The steps to making this repair are detailed below:

Move the front seat [1] back as far as it will go. It is always advisable to disconnect the battery when performing maintenance or repairs on your vehicle. Release the brake pedal when the plunger has cleared the hole in the holding bracket.

Inspect the new switch prior to purchasing it to make sure that it is not defective. In this case, the brake light switches are the same (neglect the difference in color of the locator tabs).

You can see now how the brake light switch plunger is disconnected from the holding bracket hole [2].

D) Failed brake switch.

Disconnect the battery at the negative terminal [1] using the 1/2inch socket and 1/4inch drive wrench . To remove the wiring [1], use the long stemmed flat tipped screw driver to depress the green tabs from the electrical connector (not pictured). Place a small flashlight on the upholstery next to the brake pedal to help you see what you are doing.

The other day the cruise control on my car quit working and the check engine light (Malfunction Indicator Light or MIL) came on. Also be careful not to tug on the wires too hard or you may damage the connection in up near the top of the dash.

Looking under the dash, you will find a lot of items. Arrow [2] shows the brake pedal travel hole and arrow [3] is the brake pedal itself. This is the brake switch plunger 'setting itself' within the unit.

Before you run in and install the new switch, you should verify that it matches the old one. To reach the brake light switch, you will need to carefully insert your right hand into the brake pedal travel hole. Check the shape and dimensions of the part and the materials it is made of. While depressing the brake pedal with your left hand, use your other hand to push the switch into the bracket toward the front of the car. Press the connector onto the switch until you hear it click. On this particular car, the battery is located in the truck under the mat and next to the spare tire.

The brake light switch can be easily removed from the holding bracket [1] by depressing the brake pedal with your left hand and twisting the unit [2] about 30 degrees in the counter-clockwise direction with your right hand. Once a small gap has developed between the connector and switch, insert the screwdriver into the gap and gently pry it apart. Reconnect the electrical wires making sure that the pins are correctly aligned. When the light first came on, I was puzzled as I was in the middle of driving at about 50 mph down the road. You may hear a ratcheting sound when you release it. The brake light switch is located at point [1] in the figure. Once the wiring harness is reconnected, insert the switches plunger into the holding bracket hole (see arrow [2] on step 7)

Ditto for the brakes, which of course are discs all around, with the usual bevy of aids.

The front seats adjust by power and the driver's has memory settings, and the seats are comfortable for all day driving. The lag is quite noticeable, but once the engine deigns to pay attention to your right foot's command the performance is just fine - remembering that this is more a luxury car than a twisty bit screamer. That one will set you back just shy of 50 grand to start with, however - but I bet it's fun!

The COMAND interface uses a console-mounted knob to operate the center stack's big LCD, which is perched atop the stack almost like an afterthought. Mercedes' sample car also had a certain amount of AMG-themed stuff added, as well as a few options packages (including "premium" and "sport"), and you can also add stuff like a very good harman kardon LOGIC7 sound system with excellent amplification and speakers designed to play stereo and 5.1 recordings ($1000), Bi-Xenon headlights ($850) and active parking assist ($900).

Designed to compete with such worthy cars as the Audi A3, Acura TLX, Lexus IS and the like, the CLA wears the "four door coupe" look the company pioneered with its original CLS a few years back. Three drive modes help control your drive; the car defaults to "eco," but there's also a "sport" and a "manual" mode. Maybe the smaller size just works better, but whatever the reason may be I really like how this car looks. The sample was in an outrageous red color, with black and chrome trim and a lovely panoramic sunroof, and that didn't hurt - though if you're trying to drive unnoticed you might want a less flamboyant color.

It isn't the smallest car Mercedes-Benz sells in North America, but the CLA-class "four door coupe" is a very nice vehicle that, despite big time turbo lag, moves its passengers along smartly and in great comfort.

Sport mode is obviously the most interesting and it wakes the car up very nicely, making it quite a fun drive. Mercedes insists on putting a numbered keypad on the center stack, but the Bluetooth and voice recognition work just fine.

Whatever version of CLA you choose comes with a seven speed dual clutch automatic transmission (the AMG's is tweaked, of course); Mercedes-Benz's sample had paddle shifters that work pretty well, though shifts weren't as crisp as Porsche's PDK (few are!). According to Mercedes-Benz' Canadian website, the CLA 250 starts at just $34,300.00, which is pretty affordable for a premium car such as this. And it starts at a reasonable (for a Benz, anyway) $34,300.

When driving the car, you won't forget you're in a Mercedes-Benz, which means it tips the luxury/sport scale on the luxury side, but it still does a nice job and it corners well, especially (of course) in sport mode. Eco mode is pretty sloppy, and really runs up through the gears quickly, but most eco modes are like this.

The two liter four cylinder engine works well once the turbo spools up.

The cabin is very Mercedes-Benz, but it seems less busy than some of the company's cars I've driven. It works well and its column-mounting makes room on the center console for storage, cup holders and the like.

Toss in other stuff like satellite radio, a media interface and integrated garage door opener and you can raise the bill to ford f-150 about $47,500, which is starting to get up there but which is also pretty reasonable considering the car you're getting for that amount of cash.

Mercedes-Benz Canada sent the CLA 250 4Matic for me to play with, the all wheel drive version of what otherwise is a front drive "sedoupe," and that's really the best version to get unless you want to go whole hog and get the AMG - which among other things ups the two liter turbocharged four banger's output from an adequate-but-leisurely-to-accelerate 208 horsepower to what I imagine is a far more interesting and exciting 355 horses. Controls are generally straightforward and located well, especially since Mercedes moved the cruise control stalk down below the signal light one, a move that makes using those controls a lot less confusing than before. It's swoopy and kind of sexy in a way that seems to belie Mercedes' traditionally rather boxy mien. The electromechanical power steering also works well and offers good feel. And while I think the four door coupe concept is silly - why not just call it a sedan and be done with it, since there's nothing wrong with having four doors? - it's a handsome car inside and out. It also means you'll be seated very comfortably and coddled nicely, which is as it should be if you're driving a Mercedes-Benz.

The CLA's chassis features McPherson struts up front with an independent multilink rear suspension, and it's very good; even in sport mode you won't find it particularly jarring, though that setting does tighten the car's responses nicely. The main shift lever is steering column-mounted and is one of those weird, electronic things that are unfortunately becoming so popular. Not that it isn't a situation owners wouldn't get used to with much difficulty, but as a casual Mercedes driver I found the reversed stalks quite distracting.

The CLA's body style looks better to these eyes than its inspiration, the CLS. We found the rear seat fine for two relatively short people, though I've read other reviews where they complained about its small size (they must have been bigger folk than us because they didn't like being "couped" up back there).. If you want to get out of "eco" mode completely you have to shut it off twice, once via a center stack-mounted button, and again by cycling through the driving modes via another button mounted nearby.

The displays work fine - with large analog ones for speedo and tacho meters with a multifunction LCD in the middle. Add the 4MATIC full time all wheel drive option (which can apparently send up to half the torque to the rear wheels)and the price goes up by only a couple of grand, to $36,500.00. Once you've done that, however, you'll undoubtedly find it logical and easy.

Importantly for the Chinese market, the wheelbase has been stretched by some 4 inches, opening up rear-seat room. (Today's Taurus has been criticized for offering rear-seat accommodations that are no better than the mid-size Fusion.) Demographic studies illustrate how the increased presence of "undesirable" minorities, especially blacks, led to whites fleeing the inner cities.

After WWII, middle-class white America began the mass exodus from the inner cities. The "pull" hypothesis states that after WWII a combination of federal housing programs, mass produced housing, and new highways made suburbanization possible.

For blacks, unlike whites, race was not the underlying factor influencing the abandonment of the inner city. The Car Culture. In effect producing what Clinton proclaimed was "chocolate cities and its vanilla suburbs."

Racial segregation through urban flight and suburbanization occurred primarily because of two phenomena: the "pull" of new suburbs, or the "push" from the inner cities. In Automobile Age Atlanta (1979) Howard Preston illustrated how the automobile became a social symbol of wealth and combined with federal subsidies led to the development of Atlanta's new suburbs. However, it is the "push" hypothesis that perhaps played a larger role in the suburbanization process. 1970. 1997. The result was a new urban form with predominately white suburbs and minority inner cities.

This hypothesis is the one typically discussed in the suburbanization literature, and focuses on racial segregation as a function of the extent to which blacks and other nonwhites could not buy suburban homes through discrimination by government programs and "redlining" by lending institutions and Realtors.

PS, If, as is often the case, the engine is left for a period of time before the correct diagnosis is made, (or even worse, pulled apart and left with the atmosphere getting to it) the corrosion damage (from contaminated oil) to the internal mechanical surfaces of the engine can be catastrophic.. if the car fixing friend knew anything about marine engines he would have gone straight for the exhaust manifolds rather than the head gaskets.

In my experience as an engineer and spare parts supplier, the number one cause of engine problems on older Gas (petrol) marine engines is Exhaust Manifold failure, (mainly on engines used in salt water), the minute an engine starts to misfire or run rough the owner goes through every concieveable option, (plugs, carb,leads, rotor, etc) but usually fail to notice the tell tale signs of emulsified creamy deposit in the oil filler cap, and often the creamy oil in the sump, when they finally do accept that there is a more serious problem, they usually have a buddy who is "good with cars" and who instantly diagnoses the problem as a failed head gasket, and procedes to tear the engine apart, then (if you're lucky and he follows the job through) he refits the heads and inlet manifold declaring the job " good to go" the poor owner then arrives at the coast with the Wife, Kids (in wetsuits), Dog, skiis, Tube, and picnic baskets and proceeds to slip the boat, the engine often starts fine, runs for a minute or two then as the cooling system fills with water it starts to misfire just as he is reversing away from the dock, it then stalls, will not re-start and he hits another boat.

After a few minutes of cranking the engine and a bit of spluttering, he either gets a tow back to the slip, or paddles (with the skiis, wife on one side, him on the other, have you ever tried that) and puts the boat back on the trailer.

Marine exhaust manifolds are water cooled and most (Mercruiser, Volvo Penta, OMC, etc) Manifolds are cast iron, this material (although great for the job) is porous and spends its life soaking up the salt from the water that passes through it, until ultimately corrosion eventually breaks down the internal walls that separate the exhaust gas from the cooling water, the resulting hole then sprays salt water up into the exhaust ports causing all the associated problems,

That would savage auto parts be a good scenario and ending, (apart from the thunder faced wife and kids, and the end of a beautiful friendship with the car fixer) it could also be a lot worse, (think coastguard rescue etc)

Best Sedan 2012

The fuel economy of this car is claimed to be a class-leading 24 MPG in city and 35 MPG on highways. Mileage ranges between 20-23 mpg in city and 30-34 mpg on highways. The mileage is an admirable 22/33 mpg on city and highway roads, respectively. The new E-class starts at $48,500. You can also have a tuned version of the same engine, which produces 190 hp, or a 3.5-liter V6 engine producing 271 hp.

Toyota Camry

Like the Accord, the Toyota Camry is one of the industry bigwigs. The range starts out at about $22,000. This is because sedans are the most comfortable cars around and give a decent mileage as well. An excellent engine, roomy interiors, smooth ride and good build quality were ignored majorly due to the aggressive, sharp exteriors. Prices for the hybrid start at $24,000.. The Camry is also available with a 2.4-liter gas/electric hybrid engine, which produces 200 hp. All but two models are equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4, producing 200 hp. All the 2012 models of the Camry now come equipped with automatic transmission. Drive safe!

Acura TL

The TL can be termed as the most underrated car of 2011. The I4 engines give a mileage of 22/29 on city/highways, whereas the V6 models give about 17/26.

Under $40,000

Quite a few electric and hybrid sedans, such as Honda Civic Hybrid, Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf have made their way into the market and can be considered if you want to do your bit in the efforts to assuage global warming. Many reviewers have reported it to be the best sedan for the money, with the perfect balance between cost, comfort, engine, power, roomy interiors and advanced technology. While the A6 lags behind its main rivals in terms of engine power, it makes up for it with a much better fuel efficiency and cozier interiors, along with the excellent Quattro AWD system. Mileage figures range between 19-21 mpg in city and 28-32 mpg on highways. You need to note that every year, new variants of previously launched models are released. The base model of the Accord has a 2.4-liter I4 engine that produces 177 horsepower. However, with a toned-down 2012 body, the Acura should catch up with the rest within no time. However, it still remains the best choice in its price bracket for many reviewers, including Edmunds.

Hyundai Sonata

The Hyundai Sonata is a major competitor for the Accord and the Camry. The FrontTrak models of the 2012 A6 have a turbocharged 2.0-liter I4 engine providing 211 hp to the front wheels, whereas the Quattro models have a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 providing 310 hp to all four. The new 5 series sedans come with either rear or all wheel drive. The top end 'Executive 4Motion' models have a 3.6-liter V6 producing 280 hp. The base engine of the Acura is a 3.5-liter V6 developing 280 hp, whereas the 3.7-liter V6 churns out 305. The V8, however, gives 16/26 in city/highway. This is why it is important to stay updated with the new arrivals.

Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is undoubtedly one of the best-selling cars of all time. The price of this excellent Honda starts at an affordable $21,180. Top-end models, costing about $62,000, come with a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8, which produces 400 hp. The mileage, though, is considerably reduced to 15 mpg in city and 20 on highways.

Mercedes E-class

Mercedes and BMW are the prime contenders in the premium segment. Moreover, the mileage of the base model is an impressive 23 MPG in city and 34 MPG on highways. You also have a choice of a 263-hp 3.5-liter V6 and a 240-hp 3.0-liter gas/ethanol V6. This pulley is part of an assembly that allows the pulley to dynamically apply continuous pressure on the timing belt (via the tensioner) to take up the slack if the belt stretches. Therefore, you can use the instructions below to replace a broken timing belt on a non-VVTI engine. If you don't have an impact driver, use a breaker bar (C) secured to the ground or frame of the car (D). Most engine components in the 1MZFE are interchangeable with the 3MZFE, including the timing belt, tensioner pulley, and guide pulley, although the 3MZFE has a different tensioner configuration.

Other parts are often replaced at the same time. As Japanese cars shift their manufacturing to the US, OEM manufactureres have come to include American companies like Gates and Dayco.

Step by Step: Replacing the Timing Belt and Other Parts

In models before the 1999-2003 introduction of VVTI (Variable Valve Timing) technology, the engine's valve train is "non-interference," meaning that if the timing belt breaks while the vehicle is operating, it will not necessarily damage the valves or pistons. As a last resort, find a friendly garage owner who'll torque the bolt off for you with their 180-lb air-powered impact driver.

Turn the engine clockwise (E) to align the crankshaft pulley to the Top-Dead-Center (TDC) mark on the timing belt cover (F). On the four-cylinder 5SFE Camry these seals do start to leak at about 150K, but on the V6 MZFE they last longer. Applying equal turns on each bolt will gradually compress the tensioner pin against the tensioner pulley assembly. but be careful ... Click on a photo to enlarge it.

Start by installing the new belt on the right camshaft using the paint line on the new belt (GG). As this occurs, the timing belt will tighten up.

(Optional:) At this point you can start the car to check the belt alignment. It is used in many Toyota and Lexus cars from 1994 to 2003, including the Lexus ES300 and RX300, and the Toyota Camry, Avalon, and Solara. If you want to use Japanese OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) parts--the parts that Toyota puts its own label on--you will want a Mitsuboshi timing belt, Koyo pulleys, and an Aisin water pump. A small amount of slack will now exist between both camshafts and between the right camshaft and the crankshaft.

Remove the old timing belt (FF).

Transfer the paint marks from the old belt to the new belt: set the old belt down, place the new belt over the old belt with their cogs aligned, and wherever you see a mark on the old belt, place a matching mark on the new one.

Letters refer to photos at the end of this section. The fluid level should drop. This is a tool of many uses.

The crankshaft pulley bolt can be 'shocked' (torqued) on with a mechanical impact driver, if either an air or electrically powered impact driver is not available (you may be able to rent them at an auto retailer). If that desn't work, it's possible your car's battery is too weak to provide enough amps to loosen the bolt; you can try jumping the battery with another car's battery. Some shops always replace the water pump with the belt, but in my experience the Aisin water pumps that come with the MZFE Camry are good for at least 200,000 miles. Whether or not you need to replace the seals depends on their mileage, age, and their observed condition after you remove the timing belt cover. Add more fluid and repeat the procedure until the fluid level has stabilized.

Replacing Broken Belts

The cost of the belt and components can vary greatly. If that doesn't work, applying heat to the bolt from a propane torch can help ... After 200,000 miles, I would definitely replace the seals (camshaft, crankshaft, and oil pump) and the water pump as well, along with the timing belt. Click on a photo to enlarge it.

Check that the camshaft alignment marks match the backing plate alignment marks. Assume three or more hours to replace the belt alone.

Impact driver (electric, compressed air, or mechanical)

Letters refer to photos at the end of this section. Being off by one cog will cause an engine misfire. If not aligned, screw the crankshaft bolt back in and rotate the engine with a wrench until alignment is made (CC).

After the engine is aligned, apply paint marks to the camshafts and crankshaft, to their backing plates, and to the timing belt. The tensioner mounting bolt runs through a sleeve that allows the pulley to move approximately 30 degrees to take up belt slack.

Side motor mount (engine control rod, "dog bone") (optional)

Power steering fluid (optional)

An electric impact driver is even better, if you can afford it. Using a "high mileage" oil may swell the seals and stop leakage for a while, though eventually (certainly after ten years) seals turn brittle and this trick won't work.

But you can find good parts from other manufacturers as well. The tensioner (actuator) doesn't generally need replacing. Alternatively, you can always bring your car to a private garage and ask them to torque the bolt on for you. Again, use the paint line on the new belt for alignment and use a plastic alligator clip to prevent the belt from slipping off.

Guide the right side of the belt over the water pump and then position the belt on the crankshaft pulley cogs. These marks will help with re-alignment if the crankshaft or camshafts happen to move during belt installation (DD).

Unbolt the timing belt tensioner (EE).

Twist the timing belt about 45 degrees, simultaneously, in two places: between the right camshaft and the crankshaft, and between and the right camshaft and left camshaft. The tensioner pulley is slightly more difficult. After installing the belt, you can do a compression leakage test to make sure the valves are still okay.

With either a long metal bar or crow bar, apply pressure to the left side of the pump to relieve tension on the power steering belt (M). Keep the one long bolt in place while removing the bracket (W).

Remove the timing belt guide (X, Y, Z, AA, BB).

This tool will ease removal of the pump's mounting stud, thereby allowing the pump to clear the camshaft-side timing belt cover. The torque from the starter motor should relieve the tension on the bolt. Remove the hose clamp and hose from the metal tube located below the crankshaft pulley G). If the power steering fluid was drained, pour in new fluid and turn the steering wheel right to left to create suction. Removing the stud is easier than removing the camshaft sprockets and belt cover before removing the pump.
